Themus derives from THEaterical MUSic.
Themus Ensemble plays compositions where the written scores contain theatrical indications. We insist on calling these pieces theatrical music or musique théâtrale and not musical theater or théâtre musical. The latter is an ambiguous term that could mean written or improvised music as an accompaniment to plays or musicals, and where the music has a second role. Ensemble Themus plays compositions where the written scores contain theatrical indications. We insist on calling these pieces theatrical music or musique théâtrale and not musical theater or théâtre musical. The latter is an ambiguous term that could mean written or improvised music as an accompaniment to plays or musicals, and where the music has a second role. The term theatrical music, on the other hand, refers to, or should refer to music written for musicians who challenge certain theatrical tasks. Even if theatrical parts of a certain piece may seem to take more space than the music, it is done for musical reasons and, therefore, the music has the main role. The music, the score and musicians have equal roles.
Themus also improvises to films, art videos and other media works.
We welcome further collaborations with video artists, musicians, photographers, dancers, film makers and others.
